Mock Lab Rules

A friend send this to me while I was working at the Citrus Center as a molecular biology research assistant, I hope you biology majors get a good laugh out of this :)

-When you don't know what you're doing, do it neatly.
-Experiments must be reproducible, they should fail the same way each time.
--First draw your curves, then plot your data.
-Experience is directly proportional to equipment ruined.
-Always keep a record of your data. It indicates that you have been working.
-To do a lab really well, have your report done well in advance.
-If you can't get the answer in the usual manner, start at the answer and derive the question.
-In case of doubt, make it sound convincing.
-Do not believe in miracles - rely on them.
-Teamwork is essential, it allows you to blame someone else.
-All unmarked beakers contain fast-acting, extremely toxic poisons.
-No experiment is a complete failure. At least it can serve as a negative example.
-Any delicate and expensive piece of glassware will break before any use can be made of it.

Evolution

Do you believe in Evolution???

There is no doubt in my mind that evolution is happening. A living organism adaptation to its environment is seen from bacteria to humans. Some of these adaptations are necessary for these organisms survival in their environment or the world. Natural selection would be a process playing an evident role supporting evolution.. Evolution has formed who we are now and the things around us as there are many facts to support this. Religion should not play a part in our opinion of evolution. Evolution is a concept supported by facts unlike religion which is just supported by our individual faith. Don’t get me wrong, I have lots of faith and believe in God but how is it that so many people believe in what they can not see but discard proven facts? In my opinion God created us and is working in improving us with time. : )

Bring Dr. Lanza to UTPA

If any living scientists could be invited to UTPA I would want that scientist to be Robert Lanza. Robert Lanza is a physician and eminent stem cell researcher working on engineering spare human parts using embryo clones. Since there is a probability that tissue transfer could be rejected by the recipient due to the DNA difference of the tissue and the recipient, Lanza went on to search for a way to use one’s own DNA to create that tissue. Which not only eliminate the probabilities of rejection but would also eliminate the use of harsh immunosuppressive drugs. He is close to delivering cellular therapies that might reseed the immune system, heal damaged hearts, and even save limbs. The only thing that is stopping him from doing this is the United States government policies due to the controversial issue of embryonic research.
I believe this kind of research could change the face of medicine and would be an interesting topic to bring to UTPA.
