Marylin Monroe knew what she was talking about. At this time this is how I feel. There is no denying that I have my flaws. I have been molded to be independent in order to survive, or at least to get out of the circumstances in which you have been placed in. My independence is a characteristic that would undeniably describe me. But with that comes great responsibility. (Like stated in the Spider Man movie : ) ) At times I feel that it is too much to handle but then I rely on my faith and figure out what is out of my control and what is.
Most of my friends know that I have a lot more of my best to offer than my worst but I appreciate those who have been there for me thick and thin.

I am tired of people dismissing science due to there religion. I tutor adult ESL students in science and it can be very difficult to tutor someone who blindly believes in what they were told in church. In this case I am talking about Evolution and the story of Adam and Eve. Well, since most of my students are Catholic I decided to share this quote by a well known Catholic leader in South Texas, Bishop Reymundo Peña. After they read it I had no complaints or comments when explaining the Theory of Evolution. Most of them were even intrigued with the idea that scientist found apes to be our comment ancestors.
Wow. What a difference it makes when they read that it is ok to be open-minded about such things when it comes from a religious official, specially a local one. ; )
“Space Beer”
This was a MNS headline that caught my attention. This beer is not really made in space, the barley which it is 100% made out of was grown in a five month mission in the International Space Station in 2006 sponsored by Sapporo breweries. Not being sold on Earth yet but some have had the honor to try this beer.
This is being partly funded by the Russian Academy of Science, in Japan. In my opinion the Russian Academy of Science should use its funds in better productive things. How is making beer out of out of space cultivated barley an improvement in science? Don’t get me wrong, the space program should be funded but not for useless purposes as these.

Don't leave a trace... or DNA

Dr. Gunn had informed us a couple of weeks ago that the best way to cover DNA evidence through blood was that we should use jean material to clean up since it apparently contains a dye which disintegrates DNA. Well I just found an article which states that any "oxy" cleaner would be a good way to clean evidence since this definitely disintegrates DNA and tests negative for blood testing. This is good to know.
So note to self:
Always carry jeans and oxy-clean, you never know when it's needed. (buajaja) jk

So according to this article McAllen, Texas is the place with least number of single people as well as having an imbalance of 28% more women than man. Last year, the New York Times published the results of its census analysis stating that 51% of U.S. women live without a spouse. However, Sperling's BestPlaces discovered this might not be the whole story.
"The Times came to some insightful conclusions with their analysis," said Bert Sperling, lead researcher for Sperling's BestPlaces. "We made some different assumptions to more closely reflect our national lifestyle where fifteen year-old girls aren't commonly expected to get married."
The New York Times used, at that time, the latest demographics from the Census Bureau, including women above age fourteen who were unmarried or separated. Indeed, according to a University of Texas survey, the average age of women at their first marriage is 26.
Sperling's firm looked at similar Census data, but restricted its analysis to single, widowed, and divorced women age 25-64. Without this cap on the age range, places with higher concentrations of elderly people would show a misleading number of single women.
Sperling's conclusion is significantly different than the New York Times. In the 379 metro areas nationwide, 34% of women 25-64 are single.
Despite all the attention to this new milestone for single women, the difference between the number of single men and women is not as great as one might think. Nationally, 32% of men are single.
Where do the lonely hearts live?
"As interesting as the nation as a whole is trending," Sperling said, "we want to see which places had the greatest percentage of single men and women."
Sperling's firm broke down the data by metro area, revealing interesting patterns on where singles live.
San Francisco seems to attract single people like a good pickup line, if there is such a thing. Compared to every other metro area in the U.S., the San Francisco region, which includes areas south like San Mateo and Redwood City, has the highest percentage of single people.
Detroit, with 43% singles, is second only to San Francisco. New York, and Boston round out the top four.
Most southern cities are not flush with single people. Those cities in southern states that have more singles are homes to colleges, where students might choose to remain after graduation, or are known for their nightlife. New Orleans, Austin, and a handful of Florida cities all have more singles than the national average.
"There has to be a lot going on for singles," said David Evans in a phone interview with BestPlaces. Evans is an online dating researcher based in Boston, a city that is 39% single. Evans said Boston has the key factors for single living. "It's a college town, it has nightlife, culture, and lots of jobs."
Whether by choice or circumstance, many are living in some of the biggest cities, surrounded by millions, and still find themselves alone.

Logan, UT, and Provo, UT, both have fewer than 20% singles, the lowest in the country. Texas cities McAllen and Laredo have similarly low numbers of single people.

Evans said many dating events take care of any imbalance by "stocking the pond," applying a quota so the number of participants of each sex are equal.
Still, where there is an imbalance, the dating life is easier on one gender. Online dating companies are cluing into the gender gap. "All the sites are getting to where the ads are different in geographic areas," Evans said.
When advertising on TV, the radio, or the Internet, personals websites can alter the ads based on whether the city is likely to have a dearth of one gender. An effect of this, Evans said, is that people perceive that there are plenty of fish in the sea.

NO coexistence between dinosaurs and humans
A couple of my friends were talking speaking about evolution. As the conversation went on it was stated, “If we can survive the dinosaurs, we can survive anything.”
My jaw dropped. Are there people out there that believe we coexisted with dinosaurs?
Dinosaurs roamed the Earth for 200 million years until an asteroid hit Yucatan, Mexico which caused the extinction of dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Now let’s think about it… how long have humans existed? Our evolution dates back to 4 million years ago. Now I know most of us are bad with math but that leaves a 61 million gap. There was no coexistence between dinosaurs and humans. That is right. The Flintstones are fiction!

Bipedal...
Did you know that our evolution created human birth problems and the dependency of our parents! That’s right. Our bipedal locomotion which has helped us through the process of natural selection, modified the pelvis making child birth more painful and dangerous and gave us a longer dependency on our parents that other organisms since we had to be taught to walk. That is the “price we had to pay” to help our survival.

Studies have shown that many college students have misused ADD or ADHD medications to give them that boost they need to help them study or to keep them awake or alert at times of finals. This can be very dangerous due to the side effects these drugs can have on each individual.

Good thing I don't smoke...

I could not believe when I saw this commercial. This CHANTIX commercial starts with a tortoise and a rabbit in a hypothetical race to be nicotine free. This is a pill that will help you quit smoking cigarettes by blocking nicotine receptors in your brain. As the commercial developed it showed about a minute long warning about side effects. Among many side effects such as nausea and vivid unusual/strange dreams, they emphasized the suicidal thoughts that have been reported with this pill. It makes you think that you are better off smoking than taking a pill and risk killing yourself.
I can’t comprehend how they would even spend the money to advertise such a pill. Why not spend the money in refining the pill to be bit less suicidal?! I encourage you to see this commercial and see for yourself. I hope you are not a smoker and if you are I hope you are like the rabbit in this commercial, just chilling while watching the tortoise struggle. (buajaja) Or you can always go cold turkey.
They state a statistic that states:

Do you believe in Evolution?
Do you believe in Evolution? Or are you are Creationist?
Science has shown evidence that evolution occurred but there has been much controversy among many believers. Even with evidence, part of their faith is tested by disproving Adam and Eve.
You would be surprised how many people are confused about the Evolution Theory. Not knowing that a theory in scientific terms takes another meaning.
Should we let them dwell in ignorance?
Karl Marx stated, that “religion is the opium of the people”.
Can we change this?

Mock Lab Rules
A friend send this to me while I was working at the Citrus Center as a molecular biology research assistant, I hope you biology majors get a good laugh out of this :)
-When you don't know what you're doing, do it neatly.
-Experiments must be reproducible, they should fail the same way each time.
--First draw your curves, then plot your data.
-Experience is directly proportional to equipment ruined.
-Always keep a record of your data. It indicates that you have been working.
-To do a lab really well, have your report done well in advance.
-If you can't get the answer in the usual manner, start at the answer and derive the question.
-In case of doubt, make it sound convincing.
-Do not believe in miracles - rely on them.
-Teamwork is essential, it allows you to blame someone else.
-All unmarked beakers contain fast-acting, extremely toxic poisons.
-No experiment is a complete failure. At least it can serve as a negative example.
-Any delicate and expensive piece of glassware will break before any use can be made of it.

Evolution
Do you believe in Evolution???
There is no doubt in my mind that evolution is happening. A living organism adaptation to its environment is seen from bacteria to humans. Some of these adaptations are necessary for these organisms survival in their environment or the world. Natural selection would be a process playing an evident role supporting evolution.. Evolution has formed who we are now and the things around us as there are many facts to support this. Religion should not play a part in our opinion of evolution. Evolution is a concept supported by facts unlike religion which is just supported by our individual faith. Don’t get me wrong, I have lots of faith and believe in God but how is it that so many people believe in what they can not see but discard proven facts? Bring Dr. Lanza to UTPA
If any living scientists could be invited to UTPA I would want that scientist to be Robert Lanza. Robert Lanza is a physician and eminent stem cell researcher working on engineering spare human parts using embryo clones. Since there is a probability that tissue transfer could be rejected by the recipient due to the DNA difference of the tissue and the recipient, Lanza went on to search for a way to use one’s own DNA to create that tissue. Which not only eliminate the probabilities of rejection but would also eliminate the use of harsh immunosuppressive drugs. He is close to delivering cellular therapies that might reseed the immune system, heal damaged hearts, and even save limbs. The only thing that is stopping him from doing this is the
I believe this kind of research could change the face of medicine and would be an interesting topic to bring to UTPA.

Power to Change
There are many aspects of my life that need improvement, from my organization skills to my punctuality and many things in between. I believe now is the time to change.
